With the inclusion of interstate clubs such as the West Coast Eagles, Adelaide, Fremantle, Sydney, Port Adelaide and Brisbane to the league it could not called VFL and the name was changed to the AFL (Australian Football League) for the 1990 season. This streak included the 1952 Premiership. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year.
