Starbucks is not requiring a degree relevant to the coffee or retail business.
Partners have access to nearly 50 degree programs, and ASU regularly expands its online degree offerings. This May, nearly 700 Starbucks partners will graduate with a degree from Arizona State University through the Starbucks College Achievement Plan, which covers 100 percent tuition for eligible partners attending ASU’s online program. Mary Dixon: In 2014 when we launched Starbucks College Achievement Plan, we thought that partners just needed help getting to completion, so we treated juniors and seniors differently than freshman and sophomores and set the program up to reimburse partners every 6 months. In turn, these employees remain committed to Starbucks knowing their employer believes in their ability to make an excellent cup of coffee, and their ability to make a difference in the world by way of their professional accomplishments. The catch? Critics warn that details of the new Starbucks College Achievement Plan (SCAP) indicate it may not be a real improvement for the 15,000 to 20,000 workers the school expects to enroll. “But in fact this is nothing close to anything helpful.”At Monday’s launch event, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz explained that the company “actually spoke to a number of universities” and found “a significant separation between ASU’s ability to cocreate, manage, administer [courses]” that led him to settle on ASU Online. While Starbucks workers are still getting a benefit that is very uncommon for the food service industry, the new program means some stark changes for the 135,000 “partners” who staff the company’s stores.“It seems to me to be a huge scam that Starbucks is running here in conjunction with ASU, because the idea here is to make both brands shine here in the public mind,” Vaidhyanathan said.
Partners have access to more than 40 different degree programs, and ASU regularly expands its online degree program offerings. That’s the segment of society that tends to do worse online and better in person.”“Many corporations in America have public tuition assistance plans that vary in value and utility for their employees,” Vaidhyanathan said. The Starbucks College Achievement Plan (SCAP) creates an opportunity for all U.S. benefits-eligible Starbucks partners (employees) to earn their bachelor’s degree through ASU Online with 100% tuition coverage. “I have no doubt that there are going to be Starbucks employees who will be better off because they finished a degree at ASU Online. Starbucks is focused on their employees and their individual goals. The new plan is open to any Starbucks worker who averages at least 20 hours per week, and will reimburse all tuition costs beyond what ASU and federal financial aid covers for juniors and seniors. We heard this was too complicated and 6 months was too long to wait for reimbursement. Working in the Washington, DC metro area, it is common to see Starbucks located directly across the street from one another. He also suggested that other online schools might eventually be added to the system. For higher education watchers like Vaidhyanathan, though, the impulse to constrain worker tuition benefits to online degrees is troubling.
