McPherson James Birdseye McPherson (November 14, 1828 – July 22, 1864) was a Union Army major general during the American Civil War . James McPherson was born on November 14, 1828, at Clyde, Ohio. Union Major Generals William Tecumseh Sherman and James B. McPherson successfully defended against a Confederate offensive from Lieutenant General John Bell Hood on the eastern outskirts of Atlanta. He served under Ulysses S. Grant at the Battle of Shiloh and was Grant's head engineer. The couple had married near Canandaigua, New York before relocating to Clyde, Ohio. He graduated in 1851. At the outbreak of the American Civil War, McPherson was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel. Civil War Union Army Major General. In 1847, he received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point.
