MOBILE, Ala. — SMU wide receiver James Proche hit the Senior Bowl this week with something to prove as a Group of Five player. More bio, uniform, draft, salary info His use and expectations must be managed, and he doesn't have a high developmental ceiling, but Proche has NFL traits.—Doesn't pop off the tape athletically; limited speed and play power.—Has not produced down the field and could be limited to short and intermediate routes.—Doesn't play like a small wide receiver.—Press coverage basically shuts him down at the line of scrimmage.—Slot build with good quickness and agility on short routes.—Teams will be betting on his hands and ball skills over athleticism.
"Building off that, as a Group of Five player in Mobile, he's got more to prove, something to show, against players that have played in the College Football Playoff, at the Power Five level, and have the NFL Draft clout already.Saturday will bring an opportunity to prove more in a game environment, going against some of the best corners in college football.
However, Proche (4.63 40-yard dash) lacks standout speed, so it's not a lock that he'll remain the team's returner all season.
Those things I think will take me a long way. Proche logged 50 punt returns in college and averaged a career-best 9.6 yards per return in 2019.
"You don't really get too many opportunities like that because you're working on schemes and game plans during the season. WR25 James Proche , SMU STRENGTHS —Super productive receiver (111 catches in 2019) with highlight-reel-worthy plays.
View a side-by-side comparison of James Proche and Joe Reed. His approach, even arriving a solid 45 minutes before practice, hasn't changed. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.The rookie out of SMU still has his work cut out for him in terms of making an impact on offense, but Proche will likely get the chance to contribute on special teams right away. Still, Proche has good hands and plays with a chip on his shoulder. He has a small frame at 5-foot-10 and 201 pounds and he posted bottom percentile scores in the agility drills, which bodes poorly for his ability to separate in short areas if he's working out of the slot as expected.
