The variety of names for this hitch is a tribute to its widespread use. Trying this in my home, I did find a way to tension the knot by pulling the ends as best I could, but it still wasn't really as taut as I would feel comfortable with. Here's a sheepshank under tension, note how the bights pull upwards/outwards and are actually carrying the tension of the rope.- Does anyone have any concerns about using it?Then I figured I could probably make a variant of a trucker's hitch, using two directional eight loops (one small loop A, one very large loop B) facing each other, then feeding the long loop through the small one and pulling it back (like in a trucker's hitch), and then ending with something similar to the end of a sheepshank (C, making a simple loop in the standing rope and pulling the long directional eight loop end through).
The trucker's hitch is a compound knot commonly used for securing loads on trucks or trailers. As a knot it's mildly fascinating that it sort of holds, but I've never found a practical use for it, nor considered it particularly trustworthy.
Go ahead and undo it if you can, and reuse the rope. It is not the knot, but the way it is tied that shows if someone is competent around rope.Fun bit of knotting semantics, a single bight held by a half hitch in the standing end is more akin to a Bell Ringers Knot. It works for long lengths of ropes such as tarp guy-lines or clotheslines. Probably the most useful hitch there is, the Trucker’s Hitch allows a line to be pulled tight as a guitar string and secured. Form a Half Hitch in one standing end, drop it over the adjacent bight, and tighten it. The most commonly mentioned use is shortening a rope, so I gave that a go. Often the Sheepshank is used in conjunction with other knots to tie-down a load that forms part of the Truckers Hitch. In this video I will show a couple of variations of tying the Sheepshank. THE SHEEPSHANK is included here as it has been in virtually every knotting work since the 1600s, but in reality it is seldom used and should be avoided. Set Speed using 1 – 5. Assuming the purpose is shortening a long rope with a lot of slack, tensioning it, and assuming both ends to be tied in place and inaccessible (i.e. Thin or slippery rope is unsuitable for such a knot, as it can easily slip, and the knot should not be performed unless desperately needed.A sheepshank knot may be constructed as follows: ...The knot has several features which allow a rope to be shortened: I am not familiar with this particular method of tending a line. That is, in a frictionless system, every unit of force exerted on the working end would produce 3 units in the standing part of the rope over the load. Trucker's hitch. The sheepshank has always puzzled me a bit. Always seek professional advice when using knots and splices.Often the Sheepshank is used as part of a truckers hitch. Trucker’s Hitch.
ow to tie the Trucker's Hitch Knot. The Bellringer’s Knot: Bellringer’s use just one end of a Sheepshank to keep the tail of the rope off the ground when not being used. It is a valuable knot – particularly for securing loads or tarpaulins. Have you noticed it collapse at all if you put the standing ends under any greater tension?Comparable to the sheepshank, it just bends a bit but doesn't seem to give by itself under the medium loads I'm using (and I don't want to break my door handles, haha.)
Use: The Trucker’s Hitch (Power Cinch Knot, Lorry Knot, Haymaker’s Hitch, Harvester’s Hitch) (ABOK # 2124, p 344) has the distinctive feature of providing a mechanical advantage when being tightened. The most commonly mentioned use is shortening a rope, so I gave that a go. I would also recommend at the same time, doing a search for the Trukies Hitch (not 100% sure on Trukkies spelliing). This knot requires tension to keep it from falling apart, but it also comes undone under heavy loads.
It is most commonly used to shorten a rope, but it is not a stable knot and can fall apart quickly with the interruption of tension on the knot, especially in synthetic ropes. 97 likes. Practical Limitations: In practice, the Sheepshank would be almost impossible to tie under load; shortening one end and re-securing the line would be preferable. If the standing end goes through the loop, it will close under load.
How to Tie a Trucker’s Hitch. I'll include two photos of the middle and end result at the bottom. If the trucker's hitch were to be used as in the pulley diagram at right, to lift a weight off the floor, the theoretical mechanical advantage would be only 2:1. This allows climbers rappelling down cliff faces to keep most of the rope used for the rappel, by tying the knot at the top, and shaking the rope when they reach the bottom. Whilst holding sufficient tension on the sheepshank so it will not slip out, the middle rope is sliced. The shaking disconnects the knot at the top, allowing the longer section of rope to fall, meaning only a small amount of rope is retained by the anchor at the top of the cliff. By learning one of the methods of tying a sheepshank (or both of them), you will be able to secure truck loads and sailboats.
