Previously, the Toba Caldera was put in the UNESCO list at the 4th UNESCO Global Geoparks International Conference in Lombok, Indonesia, on Aug. 31-Sept. 2, 2019. These evaluators will have combined and proven professional experience relevant for UNESCO Global Geopark development (geological heritage, conservation, sustainable development, tourism development and promotion, and environmental issues).Documents allowing new evaluators to apply and carry out field evaluation for new aspiring UNESCO Global Geoparks and revalidation missions are available online:Evaluators will serve in their personal capacity, not as representatives of their respective States or any other affiliated entities. The water-filled basin of the caldera is the largest volcanic lake in Indonesia and is situated 904 metres above sea level. The Geopark’s 577 cultural sites bear witness to the history of the city that is home to a number of minority ethnic groups, including Yugurs, with distinct cultures and lifestyles. The area has a rich history, marked by Taguzgalpa heritage, with numerous pre-Hispanic settlements and a few examples of cave art. UNESCO and the Global Geoparks Network are co-organizing the 12th session of the International Intensive Course on Geoparks 2020 “UNESCO Global Geoparks and Sustainability”. They must be ready to dedicate time to carry out the evaluation/revalidation missions and study a number of documents related to the UNESCO Global Geopark applications and revalidations. Besides the rocks, the UNESCO Global Geopark is gifted with several scenic islands, peninsulas, ancient caldera, sea arches, hiking tracks and steep cliffs.

The elevated and broken topography of the area offers lookout points and panoramic views of a range of ongoing tectonic phenomena, in a landscape of wetlands, highland springs and cloud forests. Inhabited since the early Mesolithic, the area is home to a rich cultural heritage which includes prehistoric sites (Lepenski Vi and Rudna Glava), Roman remains, medieval fortresses, old traditional houses, churches and a monastery.
